Exposure to Chlorinated Swimming Pool Water Causes Respiratory and Eye Problems – Research

According to a new research, people who spend a lot of time near chlorinated pool water face a greater risk of respiratory problems. Chlorine, which is used to keep water clean, reacts with substance like sweat and urine to create byproducts such as chloramines that causes irritations in respiratory tracts and eyes. The research team surveyed more than 600 swimming pool workers including swimming teachers, students, and other employees and found out that employees directly exposed to water are more affected than others who are not in direct exposure to water. The only possible ways to reduce chloramines level in air near swimming pools is by improving hygiene levels among pool users says Dr. Jose Jacobs of the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands and colleagues in a report in the European Respiratory Journal.
