Pergolide, Medicine To Treat Parkinson’s Disease Pulled From US Market

According to latest news, Pergolide, a drug to treat the disease Parkinson has been pulled from the US market. The drug was found to increase the risk of serious heart valve damage. "Two new studies showed that patients with Parkinson's disease who were treated with Pergolide had an increased chance of serious damage to their heart valves when compared to patients who did not receive the drug," said the FDA on an online public health advisory. The FDA also advised the patients not to abruptly stop taking the medicine and consult physicians first for alternative medicines. A total estimated 12000 Parkinson’s patient were prescribed Pergolide in 2006.
