Vaccine Decreases Child Pneumonia Rate by 39% in United States

According to a new research, vaccinating infants with pneumonia PCV7 vaccine has decreased the rate of infant hospitalization suffering from pneumonia by 39% in United States. Since the vaccination of PCV7 vaccine begun in 2000, the rate of children suffering from pneumonia has continuously decreased. "A large number of pneumonia can be prevented with this vaccine," said Dr. Carlos Grijalva of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville. He continued, "It was believed that the primary focus of the vaccine was on diseases such as meningitis and bacteremia, but this vaccine also has the ability to protect against more common infections like pneumonia and otitis media (ear infections)." Presently only 80 percent of the infants are vaccinated with pneumonia vaccine, however Dr. Carlos Grijalva expects the number to rise in future.
